Special Notes:
To get some great ideas for car designs, go to Pinewood Pro's Website!

The Pinewood Derby is always one of the biggest events of the year for our cub scouts and we are looking to get as full of participation as possible. The Pinewood Derby is an event where scouts build a car to specifications and then race them. This year there is an important change - Tigers WILL participate in the Pinewood Derby! There will also be a race for all the parents - you will need to buy a second Pinewood Derby car and remember to do all your own work! ;^)

Mike DeAngelo has volunteered to lead this event this year and he is being assisted by a number of Dads in the pack. We could use a few more parents (especially for the day of the derby to come in a couple hours before the race to help with the set up and during the race). Please feel free to contact Mike directly by email: revmike@gmail.com

The derby kits will be provided after our January Pack meeting. The cost of the kit will be a few dollars. If you cannot attend the January Pack Meeting, please contact your Den Mom (or Chief) and s/he will arrange to get you a car kit. Mike has provided us with two great handouts: the first is the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Handbook. This 29 page document in Adobe format gives a great overview and details about helping the scout build his car for the derby. The second is our Pack 178 Rules for the Pinewood Derby - please review this document so everyone knows what to expect.

The workshop date is to be determined - you will be told about it soon. The workshop will last about an hour or so - be sure to have an idea of what you want your car to look like before going! Have a look around the Internet for ideas - there are lots of websites with pictures to help you decide!

WHAT TO BRING: For the first workshop the scout needs to bring a sketch of the shape of the car he wants to build. This workshop is totally optional - the intent is to help the scout and the parents if you do not have the tools or experience in dealing with the type of tools needed to build the car. We will also be giving tips to make the cars fast and durable. We will not be painting cars at the workshop.

Please keep in mind that this event is about the scout learning how to make his car to his design. Having the fastest car is a fun goal to achieve but it's more important for the cub scout to learn while doing the work on his own as much as possible.
